    Civil War Sites

West Virginia traces its very origins to the Civil War, and 150+ years later it’s still possible to experience the history of the War Between the States.

38 West Main Street | Destruction at the Courthouse: After defeating the town’s Union defenders Jenkins’s cavalry marched the prisoners to the courthouse and made them burn weapons and ammunition here. The building was used for storage and housing by Federal troops later in the war, causing considerable damage.

Park Street | General George McClellan: Visit Buckhannon City Park on Park Street to learn more about McClellan, a Union general, and the shifting of loyalties during the Civil War. While this area remained staunchly pro-Union during the Civil War, the Buckhannon support continually shifted sides as troops from both sides would arrive.

16 Marion Street | Jenkins in Buckhannon: Confederate General Albert Jenkins overcame some Union resistance here during his late summer 1862 cavalry raid. Jenkins was attracted to the town because of vast amounts of Union supplies stockpiled here. He attacked August 30 and scattered men from several Union units attempting to defend the town.

88 Rock Cave Road | Kesler’s Raid: In September 1863, Confederate Major Joseph Kesler led a raid through Upshur County aimed at capturing Sutton. As Kesler made his way back to his base in Pocahontas County, he captured seventy Union militia men at Centerville which earned him praise from his commander. Hardship and death was in store for the majority of the captured, however, others were sent to Confederate prison camps.

99 Edmiston Way | The Bassle House: After occupying Beverly for four days, Confederate General John Imboden led his wing of cavalry here to reunite with the wing under Gen. William Jones during their 1863 raid. After conferring, the Confederates moved on to Weston. Long lines of cavalry and wagons passed this spot May 2, 1863.

    Fidler’s Mill

First built in 1821 by Daniel Peck, the original mill was a small structure built on four posts along the Little Kanawha River.

The mill was then purchased by William Fidler in the 1840’s along with a 200 acre farm, and it remained in the Fidler family for most of the next 140 years. William, using slave labor, enlarged the mill and built a dam a short distance up stream. A wooden mill race powered a saw mill, and a 20-foot overshot wheel was used to grind grain. Fidler’s Mill is fully operational historical gristmill that is viewable to visitors.

The mill eventually became a community building, an economic center, a social hall, and a primary visual attraction of the area.

    Pringle Tree Park

One of the most notable historic landmarks is the Pringle Tree Park; the current park marks the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies in Virginia, settled by Samuel and John Pringle in 1764. The brothers lived in a hollowed Sycamore tree for 3 years and eventually began a permanent settlement with other emigrants.  The burial site of Samuel Pringle and his wife Charity Pringle can be found at Hampton Cemetary.

Today, the 3rd generation Sycamore tree stands where the Pringle brothers once lived.

Pringle Tree Park is open year-round and is maintained by the Upshur County Commission. Facilities include a boat launching ramp, toilets, parking area, picnic facilities, open field areas for athletics, and play ground equipment. Overnight camping is not permitted.

    Historical Society & Museum

From June – September, The History Center Museum opens Sunday afternoons, for a special Summer Exhibit. The Museum is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Upshur County. Plan a weekend of History by visiting the Museum, shopping & dining in the Downtown Buckhannon Historic District, and visiting the 5 Civil War Trail Markers throughout the area.

During the Civil War, the structure was commandeered for use by the Federal government (as were most churches in this area) as a food commissary. Betty Hornbeck, in her book Upshur Brothers of the Blue and Gray, wrties that on August 30, 1862, following a battle of “Watertank Hill” in a Confederate victory known as “Jenkins Raid”, twenty to thirty captured Federal prisoners were marched first to the courthose and….

“after the arms had been destroyed, the prisoners were taken to the Southern Methodist Church on West Main Street that was being used as a commissary. The church contained thousands of bushels of oats and corn, all of which were taken into the street and burned by the prisoners under order of Commander Jenkins. Green coffee beans were shoe deep in the street.”

The oil painting inside the Museum, over the front entrance depicts the looting and pillaging of the frightening night so long ago. The History Center Museum is an historic structure, built in 1856 and is the oldest extant building on Main Street, Buckhannon. It was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

    Colonial Arts Center

History & Renovation of the former Colonial Theatre

The Colonial Theatre was constructed in 1924 and is listed as a contributing structure in Buckhannon’s Downtown Historic District for its exterior façade. The architect is not known at this time. Under the ownership of Garland West, it was operated as the Colonial Theater from 1930-1966 and underwent two major building renovation phases. In 1966, the West’s leased the cinema to Park, Inc. of Clarksburg, WV. In the early 1970’s, Grey Barker assumed management of the cinema, and renamed it The Cinema V. Barker is a noted UFO author and enthusiast, who died in 1984. Peter Griesinger, a documentary filmmaker, also has ties to the building. In the early 1980’s the cinema was renovated into a bar. The building contains 4,400 square feet on first floor and basement, and a balcony containing 2100 square feet.

In the last few years, the building was beginning to show signs of severe deterioration both inside and out, and the future of the former theatre looked grim. Buckhannon City Council foresaw that the building would either eventually need to be demolished–potentially at the City’s expense if the building was abandoned–or another transfer of ownership might ensue with minimal repairs undertaken and a change of use not fitting with the historic downtown theme and culture.

Buckhannon City Council held a town hall meeting in March 2017 to seek input from the community about the building and its future (see the attached minutes below). Council received suggestions ranging from a venue for youth activities, performances, training, and business meetings, among others. The dominant feedback supported public purchase of the property and renovating the space for the benefit of the community.

Following the positive response to the acquisition at the town hall, the City of Buckhannon submitted a grant proposal to acquire and renovate the Colonial Theatre for historic preservation to the West Virginia Division of Culture and History in the spring of 2017. Despite heavy competition with numerous projects contending for a piece of the pie, the Colonial Theatre proposal received $102,000 in award dollars for this grant cycle. Thus far, local arts organizations have donated $5,500 toward the renovation.

The City of Buckhannon purchased the old theatre located at 48 E. Main Street in January 2017 at a cost of $60,000, significantly below the appraised value of $80,000. As of February 2018, city employees have worked approximately 1,600 hours in demolition and clean-up work, including floor replacement and roof repair, meeting the match requirements for the grant funding of $102,000. Grant funding has provided $52,000 for materials and roof repair.

In October 2017, Buckhannon Community Theatre presented a special showing of “Rocky Horror Show” at the theatre and was a big success. In 2018, ART26201 presented a Variety Show in June and the City hosted Fall Fest performances in September with a “Battle of the Bands” and Appalachian folk dancing and old-time music.

Festival Friday is a weekly celebration with music, entertainment, produce sale and small town charm! Festival Friday starts at 5PM and lasts into the evening until 8PM.

Maps: You’ll be able to see the registered yard sales online late May, as well as get a printed map with The Record Delta. Local hotels will have maps available for overnight guests. More can be found at gas stations, local restaurants, or the local visitor center. Once you have the map in hand, enjoy your journey!

Locals: If you’re a local and want to register your Yard Sale, please watch for our Online Form.

    Hiking

One of life’s simplest joys is being outside in the fresh air. Our area has a variety of options of trail loops and paths to keep you exploring Wild & Wonderful West Virginia.

Upshur County Trails is a grass-roots trails system cared for by dedicated volunteers. Trail blazers are constantly maintaining and forging new sections. This is a kid-friendly intermediate trail, that is open for mountain bikers and leashed dogs, too. Get a full trail description and map.

Old Oak Trail at the West Virginia Wildlife Center is a bit of a hidden gem. Visitors & local alike often frequent the paved walkway at the Wildlife Center to see the native animals of West Virginia….. But you can also access the Old Oak Trail that gets you deeper into the forest and loops around a small pond. See a facility map for more information.

Audra State Park is one of West Virginia’s rustic state parks. The scenic property is famous for large rocks scattered throughout the Middle Fork River, and the untouched natural landscape. Camp sites are secluded, with many close enough to see & hear the rush of the river. Trails include the Alum Cave Trail which has the popular section of trail that is beneath a rock over-hang, plus rewards hikers with views of the river. Another small trail loop is Rock Cliff Trail. Check out the facility map with trail info.

One of the easiest trails that happens to be flat & paved is the Riverwalk Park in downtown Buckhannon. It has two loops that wrap around sports fields at WV Wesleyan College and follows parts of the Buckhannon River. **BONUS FEATURE** This trail also is home of the Buckhannon Dog Park! The parks are at the end of Camden Avenue in Buckhannon.

    French Creek Christmas Tree Farm

As a family-oriented Christmas Tree Farm, we have been helping families create those special memories for 30+ years.

Our family is now serving some third (3rd) generation customers with the same caring experience we have provided since the 1980’s. We also believe that our children are our future and endeavor to provide very special experiences for them at our farm. We provide each child with an educational Christmas tree coloring book and, of course, a candy cane. We hope you will bring your family and start, or continue, to create those wonderful Christmas memories. Slow down, wander through our fields, breathe the fresh air, enjoy the sound of your children’s voices, and choose that special Christmas tree for your home. Don’t be surprised if Santa or Frosty the Snowman show up while you’re picking out a tree!

The 2020 Christmas Season will start Friday, November 27th at 10:00 a.m. Our hours of operation for this season will be: Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
