Pond & Lake Fishing

A day fishing on the ponds & lakes of Upshur County will put you in a relaxed state of mind. Take your boat on the waters for a day of fishing, or walk along the banks of a pond – either way, enjoy the fresh air and cast your line.

French Creek Pond: Make this a perfect family outing. Located directly beside the Wildlife Center, the pond and property spans across 2 acres with picnic facilities are available. Bluegill, green sunfish, largemouth bass, and channel catfish provide fair fishing through the summer months. French Creek Pond is stocked with trout once February and bi-weekly March through May.
Directions: 11 miles south of Buckhannon on Route 20 South. This pond is part of the 329-acres of the West Virginia State Wildlife Center.

Stonecoal Lake (Wildlife Management Area): Stonecoal Lake property encompasses 2,985 total acres of forests and hunting opportunities. The lake is 550 acres full of largemouth & smallmouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, muskellunge, trout and walleye. Two boat ramps are accessible for use. www.wvdnr.gov/Stonecoal

Muskie-Lounge River Retreat

This secluded cabin is situated along the Buckhannon River. Conveniently located 2 miles from the Hampton boat launch, 3 miles from Upshur County Trails and Recreation Park, and 6 miles from downtown Buckhannon. Half the fun is the drive out to Gaines Diner! Travel on Route 20 South, and then veer left to stay on Route 20. Drive a few miles, then turn left onto Gaines Road by the Arlington Mini Mart. Follow Gaines Road for about 3-4 miles…. You might think you missed it, but just when you might give up, you’ll see the Gaines Diner on the left, with a white fence around it!
